Cast Care

The cast that has been applied today has a gortex lining and a fiberglass cast.

To care for your cast

  • This cast is waterproof. You do not need to cover it in the shower or worry if it gets wet. However, after immersing it, you should hold the cast in a position to drain the excess water and allow the cast to air dry before covering it. If your skin does not dry adequately, there is a chance of skin breakdown.
  • Do not stick anything inside the cast. This may result in skin breakdown and infection. To relieve itchiness, you can run cold water inside the cast or use a hairdryer on cold setting to blow air inside the cast.
If you experience any of the following symptoms:
  • Pale, cold or tingling extremities (fingers / toes) of the plastered limb;
  • Swelling of the extremities of the affected limb;
  • Any increase in pain / burning sensation in the affected limb.
  1. elevate limb and move extremities for 20 minutes;
  2. if this does not relieve symptoms, call your physiotherapist or doctor;
  3. if out of hours, go to the emergency department of your nearest hospital.

Contact your physiotherapist if you have any concerns regarding the cast, particularly if it is rubbing against your skin or the cast is deteriorating.
