Physiotherapy following cosmetic surgery

The physiotherapists who work at Bay Active Physio have been managing post-operative cosmetic surgery patients for over 9 years. We have a close relationship with several prominent surgeons in the Eastern Suburbs who refer solely to us.

Our physiotherapists all have a high level of anatomical knowledge which allows them to more efficiently manage post-operative oedema, and therefore produce a faster and better result.

We develop a relationship of trust and support with the patient whereby we can monitor and reassure them during their recovery and refer them back to their surgeon should they need review. We are also experienced in prescribing self management and massage routines so the patient can take an active role in their recovery.

We specialise in post-operative management of the following procedures:

1. Liposuction

  • Start treatment from 3-4 days post-operatively
  • Treatment comprises soft tissue massage with lymphatic drainage in combination with continuous ultrasound
  • Treatment focuses on areas of woody oedema
  • We monitor garment compliance and fit and reinforce the role of the garment in reducing swelling and producing an even result
  • Assess incisions for signs of infection

2. Facelifts

  • Usually begin treatment at approximately 2 weeks post-operatively, may be earlier if the patient has had a bleed in theatre
  • Treatment comprises soft tissue massage with lymphatic drainage in combination with continuous ultrasound – we use a special ultrasound with a small treatment head particularly designed for use on faces
  • We monitor garment compliance and fit and often pad the garment as it stretches to ensure continuous compression
  • Assess incisions for signs of infection and to monitor healing

3. Abdominoplasty

  • Usually begin treatment at approximately 2 weeks post-operatively
  • Treatment comprises soft tissue massage with lymphatic drainage in combination with continuous ultrasound – woody areas are usually focused around the navel
  • Discuss alternative movement strategies to prevent straining to incision
  • Scar management including monitoring for infection and scar reduction techniques including taping and cica-care

4. Breast Reduction and Gynaecomastia

  • Usually begin treatment at approximately 1-2 weeks post-operatively
  • Treatment comprises soft tissue massage with lymphatic drainage in combination with continuous ultrasound – woody areas are usually focused around the areola and under the breast
  • Scar management including monitoring for infection and scar reduction techniques including taping and cica-care
  • Monitoring of garment compliance and fit

5. Breast Augmentation

  • Usually manage patients at risk of encapsulation or with established capsular thickening or encapsulation – can begin treatment any time up to one year post-operatively
  • Treatment comprises soft tissue massage with lymphatic drainage, continuous ultrasound and breast mobility exercises
  • We also take objective measurements of asymmetry to monitor improvement

With all treatment we work closely with the operating surgeon, as we understand that protocols will vary between surgeons and patients.
