TENS

TENS is a type of short-term pain relief which can be helpful for both acute and chronic pain.

It works by suppressing or blocking your body’s pain messages by causing a tingling in the skin.

TENS may help immediately reduce pain and muscle spasms caused by:

  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Sports injuries
  • Arthritis

TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. A physio will place adhesive electrodes on the painful area, then deliver a gentle electrical current. If you find TENS relieves pain during your physio appointment, we might suggest you try hiring a machine to use at home as part as your overall pain management strategy.

When used correctly, TENS is very safe and comfortable, but it’s important to have an assessment and be shown how to use it properly.

TENS is a short term pain relief solution and should not be prescribed without the support of other manual and exercise based therapy to get long term results.
